Recycling Perez at Cinc Dies: When scrap becomes history
In the bustling industrial estate of Son Castelló, among mountains of metal and pieces of scrap metal, hides an unexpected museum of Mallorca’s industrial and everyday history. This is possible thanks to Antonio Pérez, founder of Reciclajes y Metales Pérez, who has turned his recycling business into a space where the past comes to life.
Recently, the team of the IB3 program Cinc Dies, visited our facilities to learn how objects discarded by some can become real treasures for others.
A museum in a junkyard
At first glance, Reciclajes y Metales Pérez looks like an ordinary junkyard, a place where metals are collected and processed for recycling. However, among the recovered material are real museum pieces.
Antonio and his team have developed an expert eye for identifying historical objects, pieces that tell stories and deserve a second chance. These items are not only preserved, but also offered for sale to those looking for relics of the past.
Incredible finds: Antique motorcycles, dentists’ chairs and more
During the interview with Cinc Dies, Antonio showed some of the most surprising objects that have come to his company:
- Old motorcycles: Many of them come from workshops or farms where they have been forgotten for years.
- Dentist’s chair with mechanical pedal: A real museum piece that at the time worked without electricity, using a system of pedals to move the drill.
- Old Majorcan Roman scale: Manufactured by a local company called Almanza, used in the almond and carob trade. Despite its age, it still works with precision.
- Wine transfer pumps: Traditional tools used in wineries to transfer wine from one barrel to another.
Recycling is also preserving history
Antonio Pérez points out that most of these objects arrive at his premises because people discard them when emptying houses, apartments or premises. However, far from sending them directly to the scrap yard, his team selects those pieces that have a special value, giving them a second chance.
For him, recycling is not only a question of sustainability, but also of preserving historical memory through objects.
A book on the history of recycled objects?
At the end of the interview, the Cinc Dies team came up with an interesting idea: why not write a book about all the stories behind these objects?
Antonio Pérez does not rule out the idea and acknowledges that every day, in his business, he discovers new items with a fascinating story behind them. “Looking at it this way, we would have to start doing something,” he comments with a chuckle.
